Taurean Barber is a New York City-based dancer, singer, choreographer, and teacher who specializes in musical theater.  Raised in the small rural town of Jackson, Georgia, he grew up singing in the choir and performing for friends and family at school events and talent shows.  Movie musicals such as “A Chorus Line” and “Fame” became his inspiration to become a dancer in New York City.

Taurean began his dance training in high school at the Robinson School of Dance (now T & K Studios); and toured for three years as a featured dancer with the Georgia 4-H performing arts group, Clovers & Company. After attending college at Tuskegee University, Taurean joined the Blackwell Playhouse’s local production of CATS, an experience that would change his life forever.  After performing in his first musical, Taurean packed his bags and hopped on a bus to Washington, D.C. to study dance and musical theater.  There, he worked full-time, taking dance and acting classes while performing at local theaters in the DC, Maryland, and Virginia area.

Taurean later booked a role working with Houston Ballet icon, Adrian Vincent James in Life of a DC Gypsy – the Adrian Vincent James 40th Dance Anniversary Tribute.  He received an invitation to study as an Apprentice with Dissonance Dance Theater, DC’s contemporary ballet company under the direction of Shawn Short, and one year later, was promoted to Company Member.

Taurean’s first audition in New York City landed him a job touring Japan in the musical revival Dreamgirls, directed and choreographed by Robert Longbottom. Since then, he has had the honor and pleasure of working with several Broadway directors & choreographers such as the Tony award-winning, Andy Blankenbuehler (Hamilton), Matt West (A Chorus Line) and Rob Roth (Beauty & the Beast). Taurean has traveled domestically and internationally as a performing artist.   A few of his favorite credits include Disney’s Beauty & the Beast, Bring It On: the Musical, Mamma Mia and Dreamgirls.

Today, Taurean resides in New York City as a musical theater performer represented by DDO Artist Agency.  When he is not entertaining, he loves teaching dance at the Alvin Ailey Extension for Teens and seeing Broadway shows.
